So yesterday afternoon I had about a 2 hour break in my day where I only had Oliver with me. So I decided that I would brave a trip to the Social Security office and see if I couldn't sort out the mess the hospital made of Oliver's name. I get there around 11:45am hoping that there won't be too many people there since it's not the beginning of the month and it's a Friday, wrong. There were plenty of folks there. So I diligently took my number and settled in for what I expected to be a long wait. I guess I was fortunate because I only ended up waiting about 45 minutes before my number was called. I explain to the lady that the hospital messed up and his middle name is spelled incorrectly. I hand over the birth certificate and his social security card. She then asks me for a second form of ID .. FOR OLIVER?! Umm .. he's only 6 weeks old and doesn't have a drivers license yet! Duh. So she then asks if I have a medical bill or something with his name on it. Now .. let me just say that this is what infuriates me about dealing with government agencies. If you remember from my original post about this I called the SS office and went through TONS of recorded messages just wanting to talk to a live person only to finally be told that they were busy and then it disconnects me. Well here's the thing, if I could have talked to a live person then I would have known what I needed to bring with me. It's just insanely ridiculous to me. Anyway, as it turns out my new health insurance card was sufficient which eliminated a return trip. I just am so disappointed in the total lack of Customer Service when it comes to government agencies. They all act so entitled. I have yet to experience one that made me feel like they wanted to "help" me rather than just make whatever I was trying to accomplish more difficult than it needed to be. I have always felt they make it hard in order to deter you from pursuing your needs. Anyway .. at least it's done now and I just have to wait for a new one to come in the mail.
On another note .. Monday I return to work. 6 very short weeks have flown by. I read in a book this week a quote of a quote. It said, "The days are long, but the years are short." How
TRUE it is! So Monday it's time to rejoin the rat race. Rather than focusing on all the reasons that I don't feel ready to return I'm trying to think positive about the whole thing.
What are some of the benefits of returning to work?
1. I'm grateful that I have a job to return to in the first place. So many people are out of work and specifically people have been laid off while I've been gone at my work. So I've very glad that I still have a job to go back to.
2. I'm so glad that I fit in all my work clothes again. Having a limited inventory of maternity clothes meant that I ended up wearing the same outfits week after week. Now my wardrobe has opened back up to it's full glory and I'm excited to dress in my "cute" clothes again.
3. On a similar note I have to admit that while I've been home all I've worn most days is a pair of workout pants and a t-shirt. Pull my hair back and no make up. There's something to be said for getting up doing your hair and make up every day and dressing in nice clothes. It makes you just feel GOOD.
4. It will feel good to get back to the normal routine. While I've enjoyed being at home with my kids all day in the back of my mind it's always been nagging at me not to get used to it because it won't last. Tick Tock, Tick Tock. It will be nice that that will be gone.
5. As much as I LOVE my kids to pieces. And as demanding as my job is. There is also something nice about sitting at my desk, working on an important project that challenges me intellectually, listening to my iPod and working at my own pace. At home the pace of my day has definitely been dictated to me. I got a new iPod for Christmas and have purchased some new music with gift cards and I really haven't had time to indulge in them at home. At work I listen to music ALL DAY long. Sometimes on my sound stage quietly, other times when I'm really trying to focus on something I plug my ever comfortable Bose ear buds in and just rock out in my own little world. It's nice.
6. Lunch time errands. I can run little errands all by myself at lunch time when I'm working. Nobody to ask me where I'm going and what I'm doing, no crying when I leave because they didn't come with me, no spending money on "prizes" just because they came. Nope for an hour I can run out all by myself and do what I need to do. No guilt. It's great.
7. Dare I say it? I think that I have more patience with my kids when I go to work. I miss them all day and they're so excited to see me when I come home. It makes me more appreciative of them in many ways. I make the most of the weekends when I'm home with them.
See there ARE some good things about returning to work. I need to remind myself of them. I will never get to be a stay at home mom. So I know it's good to focus my brain on the positives of being a working mom, rather than the things that I miss out on.
