The Saturday before Halloween Jeramie and I ran the Halloween Half Marathon in Provo. It was just the two of us. If you remember the first time he and I ran a half marathon just the two of us was when he decided he was going to go super fast for the last mile (and left me) only to find out he actually had two miles left and I ended up catching back up to him.
I actually registered us for this race a long time ago (like January) and I'd been really excited for it because it looked really fun. I actually went out and bought us coordinating costumes that we would both be able to run in. We never normally dress up on Halloween. So up we were at the usual 5 something in the morning. Every race day morning I think to myself, "Why do I do this?" Way too early for a Saturday morning. The last bus left at 6:30am and we arrived promptly at 6:15am. Only to stand outside and wait for buses for 45 minutes. It was so cold and kind of sucked. Eventually we made it onto a bus and sat separately while we made our way up the mountain. I think we both slept all the way to the top which was kind of nice. When we arrived it was like there was nobody there. I thought it was weird then figured out that they had a gigantic tent. This was good because it meant we could get inside and out of the cold. Which was where we just stood there for another hour or so.
This is definitely one of the things that I really didn't like about this race. You stood around a LOT. Which when you're about to run 13.1 miles the last thing you want to do is just stand in the same spot in the cold. It kind of sucked. I have fully embraced the gear drop this year. This means that you can wear warmer clothes on top of your running clothes and then right before you start the race you put those in a plastic bag and they race people drive it down to the bottom and you can just pick them up after the race (kind of like a coat check). It's awesome and means that I don't totally freeze before a race.
Big tent we waited in at the top.
They had a costume contest at the other end but we could see or hear any of it.
This dude ran the whole race like that.
CRAZY
I was a nurse.
I wore a white running skirt under the costume.
White arm warmers.
It was perfect.
I was one of very few people with bare legs.
There was a lot of snow on the ground at Sundance Resort where we started.
So off we went down the hill. The course itself was not what I expected, which really was my own fault. I guess I hadn't looked that close at the course description. We ran a lot of the time on the Provo River Parkway which meant that it was hard to navigate your way around other runners. The short story is that Jeramie was having an off day. He got frustrated with the small running quarters and had to walk a few times. I stayed with him the whole time even though at points he got snippy. But we won't rehash that. He knows what he did. ;o)
We came in and finished the race together and I swore to him it will be the last race we run "together". It's not to say that we won't run the same race. I just am not sure whether we'll run it side by side. And that's okay. I'm actually starting to think that I like to run races alone. It's hard to explain but when you're pushing yourself hard you can get grumpy. We would make a terrible team on The Amazing Race that's for sure! haha.
But either way I like to run alone. I like to push myself hard. I like to focus. It's easier to weave around people when you only have yourself to worry about. I race to beat my own times. I don't think I will ever get fast enough to actually place within my age group. I started too late in life for that. But for now I can continue to beat my own times and I'll make the most of that while I can.
Me and my doctor.
The race shirt and medal were both really cool. So at least there's that.
I LOVE this picture.
Yes that's Jeramie behind me looking up my skirt.
We planned that by the way.
This is a race I will probably not run again. I just didn't love it.
While at the time I swore I would not run another race with Jeramie again. Now I'm feeling better about that and I'm sure we will. Or I'll just run solo. That's okay too.
