Happy 17th Birthday Baylee!

Just writing that makes ME feel old.  I often forget how old Baylee is.  The whole disability thing can really throw things off.  She is becoming very very hard to shop for when it comes to birthdays and Christmas.  She loves her iPad and that's about the end of it.  Santa bought her one for Christmas last year and within months she rendered it relatively inoperable.  The newer ones are not made nearly as well as the original.  Her original was an iPad ONE.

Girlfriend LOVES her birthday though!  With an iPad that after a couple hundred dollars worth of repairs it still acted possessed we bought her a Kindle Fire to replace it.  The price was right and she was THRILLED.

I love this pictures of her!

She asked me to bake her a cake for her birthday as well.  I'd had good success with some layered cakes over the past few months so I got talked into doing a 4 layer cake by someone we won't mention (MUM!!!).  "How much harder could it be?"

All started out well....

Strawberry and Chocolate

But once I started frosting the outside .. shit fell apart.
LITERALLY

So we rushed to buy a presentable replacement on the way up to my parents.

Alas, I still served up my mess and got multiple comments that it tasted far superior to the store bought replacement.  It looked a mess but tasted delicious.

Happy Birthday baby girl!  You are a royal pain in my ass test my patience sometimes but we all love you to pieces.

Drama Llama .. girl loves her arts!

Baylee came home clutching an invitation to a performance.  As she continues to progress through the school system it's very interesting to me that there is less and less communication that comes home.  And it's increasingly frustrating.  This first year of high school wasn't the best.  I'm hoping most of that is just because it was a new school.  First year at a new school with new staff is ALWAYS rough.  West Jordan High School was no different.  Baylee is in what they call a cluster setting.  This means that she has like a "home base" type classroom that they call her Life Skills class.  In the Life Skills she's in there with other special needs kids.  She will then leave this classroom to attend other "normal" classes.  I guess the good news is that she did not break anything this school year!  She also made a really good friend, "Mariah" who has a great family (similar to our own in size and dynamics).  She and Mariah have even had play dates which is awesome for Baylee to get that kind of socialization.  Something we have never accomplished before.

So on to the drama.  I wasn't really sure what to expect.  It talked about how they had a singing teacher and a musical movement teacher that came to the school once a week I believe and they were going to put on a performance of all the things that they had worked on throughout the year.

I was worried because Baylee has always had a bit of stage fright going on.  Alas, this was not one of those times.  And the performance was SO cool.

GIRL SANG!!!!

I do believe that Frozen's "Let it Go" was her favorite.  Then one of the dances they did was to Katy Perry's "Roar", that was my favorite I think.  So fun to see all these cute kids getting their creative groove on.  You could just tell how much they were enjoying themselves.

Who said January was boring?

I guess that's what I get for saying nothing happens in January.  Yesterday lots happened.

Baylee's school called to say that she had taken a fall during PE and someone needed to come pick her up immediately.  I was conducting a job interview when they called me and so I didn't answer my phone.  I mean seriously 99.9% of the time it's some electronic message from the PTA.  They proceeded to call Jeramie and then my mum.  Fortunately my mum already had the afternoon off work and she offered to go pick her up.  I guess the school couldn't seem to get her off their property quickly enough.  They were very anxious about the whole situation.

Now, let's put this into perspective.  When Baylee was in maybe 1st or 2nd grade she fell over walking into school off the bus.  The school did not call me, even though she was complaining her arm hurt all day until the day was over.  Turned out she had a broken arm.  Since then we've been pretty cognoscente to make sure that all her teachers know that Baylee has a very VERY high pain threshold thanks to PWS.  So while she may not be sobbing in agony, you have to really watch for other signs, like swelling and the such.  I will be the first to say that it is a very fine line with her because she does enjoy attention and she can be rather dramatic at times.  But after talking to my mum once she'd picked her up she was pretty confident that Baylee should be seen by a doctor.  Being the money conscious person that I am I started by calling her pediatrician for an appointment that day.  When talking to the nurse it was very apparent that she didn't want to make time for Baylee to come in.  Being very clear with me that since I hadn't actually seen her that I couldn't truly judge whether she needed to be seen or not.  I was very clear with the nurse that she needed to inquire with the doctor (who knows that I don't bring my kids in for stupid reasons) before blowing me off.  She came back to the phone and offered me a 4:30pm appointment.  Of course.

I am so very very lucky that my mum was off and able to take Baylee in and I didn't need to leave work early.  I'd already left early the day before because I myself had been really sick.  And trust me I never call in sick or leave sick from work and have very little patience for my staff that do.  It stressed me out to potentially have to leave early a second day in a row unexpectedly.  So off they went to the 4:30 appointment.  After a series of x-rays they determined that they could barely see ONE small fracture in her foot.  But her doctor was much more concerned over the amount of pain Baylee had in her knee where they could find nothing wrong.  So she felt strongly that we should take her over to the hospital to process through the Emergency room in order to get an Orthopedic consultation.  Okay .. well this didn't sound good.  By this time they'd been in the clinic for a couple hours and I had come home from work and picked up the boys and drive my mother in law home.  So I went up to the clinic and swapped places with my mum, much to Baylee's disappointment.  She not happy to be stuck with her lame mother that's for sure.

Getting her into the car for the drive over to Jordan Valley was difficult to say the least.  It was very clear at this point even to me that she was in a great deal of pain.  And not just being dramatic.  Long story short we arrived at Jordan Valley at 6:45pm and did not leave until 2am.  It was a LONG. NIGHT.

They did two sets of X-rays and then decided that they thought they "might" see something more.  Again still focusing on the foot, not the knee.  So we were then referred for a CT scan of the foot.  At which point Baylee was done with being bounced from bed to bed and bended and molded for their pictures.  Also, they had never given her ANYthing for the pain.  She slept a lot, which I'm sure is why I think they just didn't see our case as a ER priority.  We would wait 45 mins to go get an x-ray and then another 45 mins for someone to come back and read it.  I hadn't eaten anything since my lunch at noon, I was tired, hungry and getting increasingly grumpy.  Not to mention frustrated that the whole reason we were sent to the ER was to see an Orthopedist, yet that was NOT going to happen they told me very clearly unless something looked like it needed surgery right then and there.

It was this face she made every time she rolled over in her sleep.

After the CT scan the conclusion was that they could clearly see FOUR (not one) fractures in her foot.  They kept saying to me, "Really, all she did was fall in PE doing high butt kicks?"  Yep, that's what the school told me.  It's sad, but honestly I'm really glad that it happened at school.  Had it happened at home I'm sure they flat wouldn't have believed me that that's all that had happened.  The nurse just kept telling me that I needed to see the x-ray because it was really bad and he couldn't believe she was being such a good sport about it.  Baylee literally slept pretty much the entire time we were there. I was very grateful to have my Kindle because I read the entire time.

There was also still nothing identified in her knee.  While it is grotesquely swollen there is nothing broken.  So we walked out of there at 2am, well okay I walked out, she rolled out in a wheelchair, with nothing more than a referral to the orthopedist for sometime next week.  This was what the pediatrician could have done.  I'm a little frustrated by the experience. I know my pediatrician was being conservative, she's like that.  But I really do feel like we wasted 7 hours and a lot of money to get no further than we were originally.

They put a splint on her foot and a brace on her knee.

Splint minus the knee brace.

The "Pelvic Pod" where we spent 7 long hours.  Like that comfy chair??

Baylee is completely immobile at this point.  She can't bear weight at all on the foot.  Which means she can't climb all the way down to her bedroom in the basement.  So she's sleeping on the couch indefinitely.  Apparently insurance will only provide crutches, yet she can't use them.  They will not cover a wheelchair but I can rent one if I feel I need one.  Really?  I get really tired of the fact that insurance companies are so narrow minded.  They only see 15 year old her, of course she "should" be able to use crutches for a foot injury. However, Baylee can NOT.  My wonderful work offered to let me borrow the wheelchair they have on site for now.  I'm so relieved.  A penny saved.  It's not like we'll be going anywhere but it sure does make the trips to the bathroom just a little bit quicker.

Home by 2:30am, settled on the couch while I ate my dinner in the middle of the night.
Thank you SO much Mum for sending me home food!

We have an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon on Tuesday.  It's going to be a very long few days.  I really really hope that she does NOT need surgery. I guess we will find out on Tuesday.  My gut says she won't, but who knows.  Right now she's home, not going to school because frankly I have no idea how to get here there and home.  I'm not planning to send her back to school until we've seen the surgeon, but I guess we'll see how she's moving about by Monday.  All in all, while she is in pain and that's very obvious she's in very good spirits.

And guess what .. there will be no food sneaking while she's laid out.  BONUS!!!!

I'm so very very grateful for my amazing family.  My Mum for spending her time off doing favors for me instead of enjoying the time off.  Evan and Rachel for the text messages last night to find out what's going on.  My Dad for calling first thing this morning to talk to her and get an update.  Amber for dropping off a goodie bag when she dropped Xavier this morning.  Mike for the text message this morning checking in.  And all the kind well wishes on Facebook.  I feel so lucky to have so many people in my life that care this much.

Baylee is lucky too!

PWS Christmas Party

Every year we go to the local Prader-Willi Syndrome chapter Christmas party.  This year was no exception.  However, I wasn't sure we were going to make it.  Baylee had the choice between going to watch her cousins dance recital or going to the party.  I was actually surprised she chose the party.  So off we went.  Jeramie stayed home with Oliver and Jackson, while Wyland and I went with Baylee to the party.  This year they had the brilliant idea of having everyone sit down and wait to be served their pre-prepared plate of food. If you know anything about PWS it's that these kids LOVE their food.  So this was a stroke of brilliance.

Per usual, Baylee did not sit with us.
She sat with one of her friends.

Someone brought puzzles for all the PWS kids.
Baylee walked away with like 3 or 4 of them.
2 of which were Justin Bieber, of course.

Wyland sat on Santa's lap and asked for a teddy bear.

Baylee sat on Santa's lap as well.

Santa had a laugh over her four page wish list!

Happy 15th Birthday Baylee!

I cannot believe it is Baylee's 15th birthday this year.  She is growing up so quickly.  I remember the day I went into labor.  I said to my mum that I was going to the hospital and she looked at me and kind of chuckled and said, "Okay I'll see you back here in a little while."  I'm sure she thought I was crazy for thinking I was having my baby when she still have 6 weeks of cooking to do!  But little did she know this kid wasn't waiting.  Baylee continues to be such a loving person. While she isn't always the easiest to deal with and this summer has had some interesting challenges at the end of the day she absolutely loves everyone around her.  She is completely immune to the stares and the finger pointing.  I am thankful for that more than words could ever express.  So I'll just share some of the fun things she's done in this last 15th year.

This here is one of my favorite pictures of all time.
Redondo Beach, CA

Baylee ran her first official race and loved it.

We went to Cornbelly's.
Baylee LOVES to get her face painted whenever the opportunity arises.

We spent the day at the hospital for her extended growth hormone test.
Speaking of which I found out she qualified and we will get her first shipment of meds this week.
How many kids do you know that are excited to get daily shots?

After my "near death" experience with the stomach flu Evan was kind enough
to run Baylee's next race with her.

We did some more swimming lessons.
Baylee LOVES to swim!

We participated in the annual Utah PWS fund raiser.

We spent a lot of time on the boat this summer.
And this is exactly how close Baylee came to getting in the water.

Fun days at the zoo.

Some hanging out by the pool.

Lots of fun days with family.  Including a trip to Lake Powell.

Always a Trooper

I'm not sure if some of you already knew this but Baylee used to get shots of growth hormone on a daily basis.  Then about a year and a half ago her growth plates officially closed and therefore she no longer qualified for it.  Growth Hormone stimulation therapy is a really good therapy for kids with Prader-Willi Syndrome.  Kids with PWS tend to be pretty short height wise, which doesn't help with the distribution of the weight.  So when Baylee went on the GH she drew a little taller which also in turn helped to slim her down a little too.  It also helps with energy levels as well as for some unknown reason helps to balance their tantrums.  Boy do I miss the tantrum balancing aspect of the GH!  Tantrums these days seems to be at an all time high.  Which is a drag.  Not to mention incredibly frustrating for her and us.

So after the growth plates close you have the option of doing what they call the extended growth hormone stimulation test.  Basically you go up to the hospital and they hook you up to an IV.  Then they use that IV to take blood out as well as deliver meds in.  She got be blood drawn first thing to establish a baseline and then she got her first medication.  From that point on they drawn blood every half an hour. Getting the IV itself was the usual frustrating experience. We had the "IV Team" which consisted of two girls.  The first girl tried to get it in in two different sites.  Then the second girl gave it a go next on her hand where she got it on the first try!  This was by far the hardest part.  But Baylee of course was a total trooper.  She just kind of watched TV and talked to them while they did it.  I think that they were beyond amazed that she was so good. I guess they didn't believe me when I told them she would be.  I think they were way more stressed out about the whole experience than she was.  Thank goodness!

Here she was warming up her arm with a heat pack hoping to make
the IV insertion easier.

Ever smiling, proud of her IV.

Drawing some blood.

They told us that the drugs could make her sleepy and of course they did.

All in all we were there for the predicted six hours.  It's a week later and we still haven't heard anything about the results.  Basically what we're hoping for is that the test shows that her body doesn't naturally product enough growth hormone and therefore we can put her back on the supplements again.  This is pricey medication but it really does seem to make a difference and so we're definitely hoping to qualify for it again.

Funny because this really goes to show how times have changed.  When we first started the process of getting qualified for GH the first time I felt so much trepidation.  I was very anxious about having to give Baylee shots on a daily basis. But once we got going we all soon realized that it wasn't a big deal and she would actually ask for them at nighttime.

Again, I am so grateful that Baylee is such a trooper through these kinds of things.  Sure makes my level of anxiety drop down.  Really the only anxiety is how much money it will all cost.  It bugs me to no end that they don't tell you how much medical and dental procedures will cost before you have them done.  Like NO CLUE!  It would be like taking your car to the shop and just having them surprise you with a bill.  It's ridiculous to me.

PWS Summer Fundraiser

We had a really really busy weekend this last week and I'm still trying to catch up with all the pictures I've taken.  Saturday morning we were headed over to the Prader-Willi Syndrome summer fundraiser.  I do believe they are getting better and better at organizing these.  This year included a walk, dancing, singing, raffle drawing (in which I won a iTunes gift card), food, a park, "carnival games".  It was fun. Baylee loves getting together and seeing some of the kids that go to Camp K with her each year.

They make this cute flower garden with pictures of our kids on them.
As well as a few things that describe them.

Oliver decidedly LOVES slides.  Laughs the whole time.

They had Miss. Teen Lehi there.  Baylee was enamoured with her instantly.
They also handed out medals to all the PW kids, and then their siblings.
Well and you know we love a good race medal in our house!  Baylee included.
The kids loved playing on the swings too.

Brothers are good supporters.

They also brought a fire truck and ambulance for the kids to check out.

Baylee and her friend from camp, Lindsey.

I'm not sure how much money was actually raised.
But it was a fun way to spend our morning.
They also had some really yummy food this year.  Kabobs and beans.
