Who said January was boring?

I guess that's what I get for saying nothing happens in January.  Yesterday lots happened.

Baylee's school called to say that she had taken a fall during PE and someone needed to come pick her up immediately.  I was conducting a job interview when they called me and so I didn't answer my phone.  I mean seriously 99.9% of the time it's some electronic message from the PTA.  They proceeded to call Jeramie and then my mum.  Fortunately my mum already had the afternoon off work and she offered to go pick her up.  I guess the school couldn't seem to get her off their property quickly enough.  They were very anxious about the whole situation.

Now, let's put this into perspective.  When Baylee was in maybe 1st or 2nd grade she fell over walking into school off the bus.  The school did not call me, even though she was complaining her arm hurt all day until the day was over.  Turned out she had a broken arm.  Since then we've been pretty cognoscente to make sure that all her teachers know that Baylee has a very VERY high pain threshold thanks to PWS.  So while she may not be sobbing in agony, you have to really watch for other signs, like swelling and the such.  I will be the first to say that it is a very fine line with her because she does enjoy attention and she can be rather dramatic at times.  But after talking to my mum once she'd picked her up she was pretty confident that Baylee should be seen by a doctor.  Being the money conscious person that I am I started by calling her pediatrician for an appointment that day.  When talking to the nurse it was very apparent that she didn't want to make time for Baylee to come in.  Being very clear with me that since I hadn't actually seen her that I couldn't truly judge whether she needed to be seen or not.  I was very clear with the nurse that she needed to inquire with the doctor (who knows that I don't bring my kids in for stupid reasons) before blowing me off.  She came back to the phone and offered me a 4:30pm appointment.  Of course.

I am so very very lucky that my mum was off and able to take Baylee in and I didn't need to leave work early.  I'd already left early the day before because I myself had been really sick.  And trust me I never call in sick or leave sick from work and have very little patience for my staff that do.  It stressed me out to potentially have to leave early a second day in a row unexpectedly.  So off they went to the 4:30 appointment.  After a series of x-rays they determined that they could barely see ONE small fracture in her foot.  But her doctor was much more concerned over the amount of pain Baylee had in her knee where they could find nothing wrong.  So she felt strongly that we should take her over to the hospital to process through the Emergency room in order to get an Orthopedic consultation.  Okay .. well this didn't sound good.  By this time they'd been in the clinic for a couple hours and I had come home from work and picked up the boys and drive my mother in law home.  So I went up to the clinic and swapped places with my mum, much to Baylee's disappointment.  She not happy to be stuck with her lame mother that's for sure.

Getting her into the car for the drive over to Jordan Valley was difficult to say the least.  It was very clear at this point even to me that she was in a great deal of pain.  And not just being dramatic.  Long story short we arrived at Jordan Valley at 6:45pm and did not leave until 2am.  It was a LONG. NIGHT.

They did two sets of X-rays and then decided that they thought they "might" see something more.  Again still focusing on the foot, not the knee.  So we were then referred for a CT scan of the foot.  At which point Baylee was done with being bounced from bed to bed and bended and molded for their pictures.  Also, they had never given her ANYthing for the pain.  She slept a lot, which I'm sure is why I think they just didn't see our case as a ER priority.  We would wait 45 mins to go get an x-ray and then another 45 mins for someone to come back and read it.  I hadn't eaten anything since my lunch at noon, I was tired, hungry and getting increasingly grumpy.  Not to mention frustrated that the whole reason we were sent to the ER was to see an Orthopedist, yet that was NOT going to happen they told me very clearly unless something looked like it needed surgery right then and there.

It was this face she made every time she rolled over in her sleep.

After the CT scan the conclusion was that they could clearly see FOUR (not one) fractures in her foot.  They kept saying to me, "Really, all she did was fall in PE doing high butt kicks?"  Yep, that's what the school told me.  It's sad, but honestly I'm really glad that it happened at school.  Had it happened at home I'm sure they flat wouldn't have believed me that that's all that had happened.  The nurse just kept telling me that I needed to see the x-ray because it was really bad and he couldn't believe she was being such a good sport about it.  Baylee literally slept pretty much the entire time we were there. I was very grateful to have my Kindle because I read the entire time.

There was also still nothing identified in her knee.  While it is grotesquely swollen there is nothing broken.  So we walked out of there at 2am, well okay I walked out, she rolled out in a wheelchair, with nothing more than a referral to the orthopedist for sometime next week.  This was what the pediatrician could have done.  I'm a little frustrated by the experience. I know my pediatrician was being conservative, she's like that.  But I really do feel like we wasted 7 hours and a lot of money to get no further than we were originally.

They put a splint on her foot and a brace on her knee.

Splint minus the knee brace.

The "Pelvic Pod" where we spent 7 long hours.  Like that comfy chair??

Baylee is completely immobile at this point.  She can't bear weight at all on the foot.  Which means she can't climb all the way down to her bedroom in the basement.  So she's sleeping on the couch indefinitely.  Apparently insurance will only provide crutches, yet she can't use them.  They will not cover a wheelchair but I can rent one if I feel I need one.  Really?  I get really tired of the fact that insurance companies are so narrow minded.  They only see 15 year old her, of course she "should" be able to use crutches for a foot injury. However, Baylee can NOT.  My wonderful work offered to let me borrow the wheelchair they have on site for now.  I'm so relieved.  A penny saved.  It's not like we'll be going anywhere but it sure does make the trips to the bathroom just a little bit quicker.

Home by 2:30am, settled on the couch while I ate my dinner in the middle of the night.
Thank you SO much Mum for sending me home food!

We have an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon on Tuesday.  It's going to be a very long few days.  I really really hope that she does NOT need surgery. I guess we will find out on Tuesday.  My gut says she won't, but who knows.  Right now she's home, not going to school because frankly I have no idea how to get here there and home.  I'm not planning to send her back to school until we've seen the surgeon, but I guess we'll see how she's moving about by Monday.  All in all, while she is in pain and that's very obvious she's in very good spirits.

And guess what .. there will be no food sneaking while she's laid out.  BONUS!!!!

I'm so very very grateful for my amazing family.  My Mum for spending her time off doing favors for me instead of enjoying the time off.  Evan and Rachel for the text messages last night to find out what's going on.  My Dad for calling first thing this morning to talk to her and get an update.  Amber for dropping off a goodie bag when she dropped Xavier this morning.  Mike for the text message this morning checking in.  And all the kind well wishes on Facebook.  I feel so lucky to have so many people in my life that care this much.

Baylee is lucky too!

January

In a way I feel like we've been in hibernation so far this month.  While we've haven't done a whole lot, we also have still stayed what feels like very busy.  I have very little pictures of anything at all.

But in the spirit of keeping up with the daily stuff here's a little picture dump.

On New Years Eve we went to Zoo Lights.
The short story is that it was SOOOO cold.
Kids were all miserable and very few animals could be seen.
Great idea .. but a bust.

Jackson took a shot to the mouth.
Massive bloody mess .. no lost teeth.

TONS of snow packed running.
It's pretty .. but makes me slow.  I'm never actually cold though so at least that's good.

See I added a neck warmer to my Winter arsenal this year.
It has come in REALLY handy.

Jackson took another shot to the eye from his brother.
Ended up with a really decent black eye by the next day.

Yep it's been REALLY cold.

 Our blender broke.
We've been blending protein smoothies for breakfast for months now on my regular Kitchen Aid.
We wore it out.
The sticker price was REALLY hard to swallow.
But my mum convinced me by pointing out once I got over the sticker shock I would probably be really glad I'd bought it.  She was right.  Of course.

Oliver with his morning coffee.
All my kids LOVE coffee.
Really it's just the last swallow of my coffee.
He's just so darn cute though.

In other news, Jackson took yet another blow rough housing with Wyland and knocked a tooth out yesterday.  Seriously this kid is the oldest and he's the one that gets hurt the most.  We got our Christmas tree down before New Years (I was SO happy about that).

I read somewhere, or saw somewhere that it's okay to have a lot of stuff as long as everything has a home.  I've really taken this to heart.  2013 is going to be a lot of organizing at our house.  Hopefully we'll finish painting and also get the back yard under control finally.  I figure that if we have the use of our deck and a decent back yard that we would have more space for entertaining in the summer.  So with two big vacations, we'll be trying to save lots of money which means more time at home.  So that time will be spent cleaning and organizing and getting our shit together at the house.  I'm actually excited about this.  I know it will be so worth it in the long run.

Anyone else have big goals for 2013?

Christmas Day

Yep .. still blogging very very late.  We did in fact celebrate Christmas on Christmas Day as well.  We were all very very lucky.  Baylee got a new camera, since we're going on vacation this year.  This way she can take lots of pictures on her own.  Jackson became the proud new owner of the Kindle Fire, such a great tablet for kids in my opinion.  Wyland got more "legos", really Playmobil stuff.  Oliver got a wiggle bike so he can keep up with the boys.

Oh and Jeramie and I got a trip to Mexico .. WITHOUT kids!!  So excited about that.  We haven't been on vacation alone since Jackson was 1 years old.  And it's coming up soon too!

Oliver enjoyed the unwrapping part.  For quite a lot time actually.

Evan and Rachel came to do stockings with us.

We've only seen Jonathan and J'Von once since Labor Day.
But they managed to squeeze in a few hours to spend with us on Christmas.

Grandma and Grandpa got Oliver a Mini Cooper.

Wyland and Jackson both got bikes.
YAY for CLOSET GIFTS!!!!

We are so very lucky.  Just saying that doesn't do it justice.  But we are.

I don't get it ...

2 years ago I had Oliver.  My last baby.  I knew he would be my last baby and once I had had him I set forth to reclaim my body back for good.  I jumped back on the good old Weight Watchers wagon and lost all my pregnancy weight and some for a total of about 25lbs.  I never felt like I was really overweight.  I am just under 5'5.  I think I topped out the scale at about 167 (this may have been when I just stopped weighing myself).  I weighed about that when I got pregnant with Oliver.  It was around that time that I also had to wear some size 14 pants.  At first they were my "fat pants", you know the ones you wear when you're having a fat day that don't feel quite so tight.  And then these started to feel tight.  I knew something would have to change.

Weight Watchers had worked for me in the past and I knew with commitment it would work for me again.

And it did.

It always does.

I'm happy to toot the horn about Weight Watchers to anybody that will listen.  That's how much I believe in the program.  Year after year it's voted number 1 all over the place for being the weight loss program that works.  Anyway, at work I'm on a site leadership team that helps put together programs and things for everyone at work.  With the direction that things have gone with Health Insurance more and more companies are moving towards "wellness" programs.  We are no exception.  So someone, not me, had the idea to offer Weight Watchers to employee's. I told them about my mum's work who does this on a pretty regular basis.  Reimbursing employee's for participation and success.  To  have these meetings brought to your workplace doesn't get more convenient.  Basically you have to pay your fee's up front and then if you attend the majority of the meetings and lose at least 10 lbs then you are reimbursed 100% of those fee's.  In essence this could be FREE!!!  All we needed was 20 people to sign up for an at work program.  We've got like 150-200 people that work in our facility.  And we couldn't get 20 people.  And I assure you there are plenty that could use the program.

And this leaves be baffled.  It's F R E E!!!

I remember thinking when I was pregnant with Oliver and hauling around 30 extra pounds that when I was no longer pregnant how nice it would be to not be winded when I got to the top of the stairs.  And to appreciate that feeling.  To this day I still remember that.  When I'm sat on the couch and one of the kids asks me to get something or do something I truly often think to myself, "YES!  Because it's not a big deal to run upstairs real quick."

There's this commercial I've seen a few times and I can't even remember what it's actually for but it starts by saying how we are born with a number.  And we are.  What's the first thing they do when you have a baby?  They weigh him or her and attach that number to them for life.  And forever on we are a slave to the scale and what that number says.  Jackson always weighed not enough.  Baylee always weighs too much.  Even in childhood we are closely connected to what that scale says.  It certainly doesn't change as we get older.

Today I am within my healthy weight range.  Most of this year I was consistently in the 140-143 range.  Every now and then I would pop up to 145 and then just by spending a week focusing on what I put in my mouth I could bring it back down to my 140-143 range.  I had a huge, record breaking week of running the week before Christmas.  40 miles for the week, and I also broke 1,000 miles for the year.  And then I consciously decided to take a week off.  With Christmas it was going to be difficult.  I knew taking a break before starting my full marathon training plan would be a good idea.  And my right foot has been hurting for several months now so I figured this might help sort that out as well.  That week turned into 11 days total.  That's the longest I've gone without running in probably all of 2012.  I'm glad I did it.  My foot feels a bit better, not 100% but better.  I ran today and realized how much I've missed it.  I'm looking forward to a double digit run tomorrow.  What I also got during this break was some more pounds too.  Wednesday I weighed in at 147.  YIKES!  My Weight Watchers lifetime goal is 145.  I'll be honest.  I padded that goal.  I've spent all year thinking how I would really like to lose another 10 lbs.

Honestly I would like to be in the 130-135 range.  Which means I really want to lose 10-15 more pounds.  And I was more than prepared to hit that Weight Watcher wagon again.

And I still will. I'm going to do their online program.  I've never done it online. I really enjoy the camaraderie of the meetings.  And if I lose at least 8lbs then I will get reimbursed from my work.  And that alone is motivation to at least get that far.  When talking to the lady in charge at work she didn't want to let some of my employee's participate because they only wanted to lose 5lbs.  But for someone that only weighs 120lbs to begin with, losing "only" 5lbs is HARD.  Just as hard as someone who weighs 230lbs to lose 10lbs.  They are both hard to do.  That bothers me.  I may fight that one a little bit.  It doesn't seem very fair and if WW's will allow a person to join and only want to lose 5lbs then I don't see why we shouldn't reward them the same.

But anyway, back to my original intent of this post.  I truly don't understand why we couldn't get more people to participate. I don't understand why people don't want the benefits that come along with being at a healthy weight.  Losing weight is HARD work. I will be the first to say it.  The amount of running I do, contrary to what one might think makes it harder for me.  When I'm running and burning hundreds of calories it makes me really hungry. I have to fuel my body to be able to run double digit miles.  Training for a full marathon while also trying to lose weight is going to be HARD.

But it's so worth it.  I just have to keep reminding myself of that.

So I'm putting it out there.  My goal is to weigh 130-135lbs and drop one more pant size.  I don't think I'm fat.  I know I'm in the high end of the healthy range for my height.  But I do want to lean out some.  I will continue running of course (duh!) and I've been doing some fun weight training classes too.

Why don't more people want this for themselves?
Is there anything I can do to help someone without offending them?  It's like it's this gift I want them to give themselves.

** I had some great pictures to include in this post but stupid blogger is having issues.  I may add them later if I can.

Christmas Eve

This year Christmas was a little different.  In the few days leading up to it I think we were all beginning to get a little stressed out.  With myself, Mike and Evan all trying to make two families happy (3 if you count coordinating around Jeramie's kids) it's hard to get everyone in the same place at the same time.  I know at one point I said to Jeramie it shouldn't be so hard to be able to see someone long enough to give them a gift.  But alls well that ends well and even though we made changes to how we've normally done things I think it turned out okay and we never really felt overwhlemingly crunched for time.

We actually engaged in many of our festivities on Christmas Eve this year as a result.  Jeramie had to work and so I spent the day home with the kids just trying to straighten up behind them all day long.  That alone is rather stressful.  Add to that the fact that I hadn't slept well in days because of this dang cold/cough thing that never seems to end (even today, over two weeks later I'm still fighting this thing) it was rough.  But close to dinner time we gave up waiting for Jeramie to get home so I started packing up the car to head up to my parents without him.  That's when I remembered it had been dumping snow all day.  So I threatened the kids to stay in the  house and not make a mess while I went outside to shovel snow.  We easily had over half a foot and I am very congniscent of making sure we stay on top of the shoveling before it freezes underneith.  Baylee has to walk to the bus every morning and having her walk on ice would be a bad bad situation.

Finally we headed up to my parents.  It's one of our Christmas traditions to sleep over at their house on Christmas Eve so that we're all together when Santa comes.  This year we repeated what we did last year as well which meant having our big Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve.

Xavier and Wyland

We're a big group with multiple tables.

Jackson and my cousin Rebecca visiting from England for a week.

After dinner we opened a few presents.  This is a big first for us.  Normally the only presents we do on Christmas Eve are new PJ's and an ornament.  But this year we started with some fun presents.  This was in an effort to make sure that we had time to exchange them all.  I wasn't sure how I would feel about this. But actually I think it worked out well and was a really nice way to spread it out so that it all lasted just a little bit longer.

After the presents were finished and the crowd grew a little thinner (Mike and his family went back to Herriman) we settled the kids down.  Jeramie had a few things left to wrap and then we watched a movie.  This is par our normal Christmas tradition.  The movies keep getting racier rather than more Christmassy.  Hmm .. maybe an opportunity for improvement here.

The kids were really excited and Wyland kept telling me he was too excited to go to sleep.  Finally I laid down with the three boys and faked sleep until they were all three asleep as well.  Worked like a charm.

PWS Christmas Party

Every year we go to the local Prader-Willi Syndrome chapter Christmas party.  This year was no exception.  However, I wasn't sure we were going to make it.  Baylee had the choice between going to watch her cousins dance recital or going to the party.  I was actually surprised she chose the party.  So off we went.  Jeramie stayed home with Oliver and Jackson, while Wyland and I went with Baylee to the party.  This year they had the brilliant idea of having everyone sit down and wait to be served their pre-prepared plate of food. If you know anything about PWS it's that these kids LOVE their food.  So this was a stroke of brilliance.

Per usual, Baylee did not sit with us.
She sat with one of her friends.

Someone brought puzzles for all the PWS kids.
Baylee walked away with like 3 or 4 of them.
2 of which were Justin Bieber, of course.

Wyland sat on Santa's lap and asked for a teddy bear.

Baylee sat on Santa's lap as well.

Santa had a laugh over her four page wish list!
